In Botswana the light-weight tartan blanket was adopted from the early English traders and is now used as a traditional female fashion accessory for formal occasions. Originally made from wool, the blankets are now produced from synthetic fabrics to improve their durability make them more economically accessible.
'Kobo' means blanket in the Bostwana language of Setswana. This project re-interoperates the traditional blanket with the use of brightly colored overprints. The visuals used for the blanket visuals are abstractions of the typical symbolics seen in daily Botswana culture. Expressed as minimal forms and patterns, the graphics reference cave glyphs, patterns found on the exteriors of houses, and body art.
